Mary Morstan

Mary Morstan, John's wife, is a pretty little liar.
That, Sherlock can see it at first glance. But beside some details about her, he can hardly learn anything. For once, trusting John's choice, Sherlock will be friendly with Mary, who appreciates him too. Mary's noticeable talent is to make the autistic genius behave quite normally!

Sherlock doesn't show any sign of "jealousy" towards her -Major Sholto will be less lucky. And Mary support John's need for action, his strange adventures with his friend. Patient, always taking things good humouredly, she gives John's life the joy and sunshine that was missing before.
Actually, after having helped him to overtake Sherlock's first death, she will provide her husband's life with much more than that. John Watson is definitely not a quiet and normal citizen.

Doyle's Mary Morstan is rather different -but not that much.

There are strong common points between BBC & novel characters: Mary is nice and friendly with Sherlock, she let John free to go with him on any adventure about a case.
Miss Morstan arrived in London recently. When she meets John, she has no more family nor many friends here.

But Doyle's character is far from being a freelance killer! More traditionally, she was raised in an institution in Scotland, where her father, an officer, placed her when he left for his duty in India.
BBC's version is much more interesting, no doubt! Well served by Amanda Abbington's beautiful energy and positive waves, Mary is the only woman in the show to whom a real role was written... Let's hope that this late improvement will mark the beginning of better women role in following seasons.
